Log wood chippers are typically made up of a entry hopper, the chipper blade, and sometimes collection bags for the wood chips. When a tree branch is inserted into the intake hopper and moves into the chipping mechanism, the chips exit through the top or side chute and can be directed onto the ground or even into a designated container. The wood chips that are ejected out of the machine range from one to two inches across in size. The remaining wood chips from the chipper machines make perfect mulch for ground cover and other landscaping products.
You will find that commercial wood chippers are equipped with large rollers in the throat of their feed hoppers. After a log or branch has been gripped by the rollers, the mechanism moves the branch to the chipping blades at a constant rate. The rollers also act as a safety feature and can be reversed when a branch gets jammed.
