The most common uses of air coolers are for comfort in cooling buildings or enclosed structures. The great thing about a portable air chiller or portable A/C is that they usually come on wheels that can be easily transported around a home or job site. They can be found with capacities of about 6,000 to 60,000 BTU/h in standard electric power types.  

Portable air conditioners can be found in two types, monoblock and split. Monoblock air conditioners are vented to the outside with air ducts. A single duct model unit draws air out of a room to cool the condenser. This air is replaced by hot air from other areas which reduces efficiency. Air cooled portable air conditioners use a compressor type refrigerant system that uses air forced through a heat exchanger. This is very similar to a household type air conditioner.

In dryer climates, the operating cost of an evaporative air cooler can be much less than an air conditioner. The savings can be as much as 80% or more. Some evaporative air coolers can also serve as humidifiers in the heating time of colder seasons.
